Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to come in Black Tie?
No. Why not dress to the 1920s Theme! Come as your favorite 1920s movie star in character - Clara Bow, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Lillian Gish, Fatty Arbuckle, Harold Lloyd, Will Rogers, Buster Keaton, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix, John Barrymore and Rudolph Valentino were all popular actors and actresses. Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, and Carole Lombard were just starting out. Don't know what they looked like? GOOGLE!

What about generic? Dig out that flapper outfit - be the newly liberated woman who just got the right to vote! Show up with short hair and a short skirt, turned-down hose and powdered knees! Guys, knickerbockers, patent leather, and the popularity of Oxford "bags" (we kid you not!) Contest for the best costume with great prizes!

Or Ham it up, or Glam it up! You can go black tie, put on the tux and/or the ball gown, rent some jewels and hire a bodyguard or dig out that chic pair of jeans with a rhinestone tee shirt. Be creative! Have fun!

Why the 1920s Theme?
The film industry is new to West Michigan. We want to introduce the history of this great art form, which started with silent film in the 1920s. The first Academy Awards were held in 1928 and were quite different in format. For example, Janet Gaynor received Best Actress for her performances in "Seventh Heaven", "Sunrise", and "Street Angel". Best male actor was Emil Jennings for "The Way of all Flesh" and "The Last Command".

In 1928, movie theatres were upgraded with sound systems to handle the "Talkies". Many films were just part "talkie" and part musical score during this transition phase. Hey, did you know that?

Part of the evening’s activities will be a celebrity look alike contest. Not sue who these 1920s stars are?  Check out our list of “famous faces” from this era.

Is this a benefit?
Yes, a part of the monies raised for this event will help to fund professional development programs to grow the film industry crew base here in West Michigan. The Alliance also supports training and the ongoing operations of community film offices, including The West Michigan Film Office, bringing new film and video production projects to our region from inside and outside the state. We want to see filmmaking and production work become a strong alternative to more traditional industries in Michigan.

Do I need cash for the bar?
Since this is a benefit, we are asking you to pay for your drinks. Use cash only to pay at the bar. Proper ID will be required in order to be served alcoholic beverages.
